This class focuses on how you can take ordinary, maybe even mundane objects, and create visually powerful paintings. You will learn how to create dynamic compositions that are filled with emotional impact using only a few simple objects in an uncluttered environment. Students will learn to set up and light a still life from subject matter of their choice and will work from observation.

The class will start with Tim covering some basic strategies and techniques for setting up and lighting a still life for maximum effect along with creating a compelling composition. He will talk about how you can incorporate photo references in situations where the subject matter has limited shelf-life. For example, sliced apples, ice cream or soft leaf vegetation, are things that change color, wilt or melt/breakdown quickly. He will show you techniques for getting the initial drawing easily and accurately onto your canvas, even if you have very little drawing experience. This will be followed by a step by step demo where he discusses his process as the painting progresses. He will talk about integral components that help to create stronger paintings, like: composition, blocking in, developing strong light and shadow patterns, values, value shapes, form, brush work and color/color temperature etc.

Tim's "Simplicity to Complexity" approach will have an immediate effect on the way you see and approach your paintings. He will teach you how to see simply and how to simplify and breakdown the most complex subjects in order to create a stronger foundation to build your paintings upon. The techniques and information you learn will improve your painting abilities no matter the subject you prefer/choose. He combines traditional, contemporary and abstract approaches to his workshops.

Tim is a North Carolina native who brings over 20 years of experience as a painter to his workshops and classes. His ability for translating complex painting principles/concepts into simple easy to understand instructions will help you create more dynamic paintings of your favorite subjects.
